How to Make an Indoor Golf Mat: Things to Consider!

Before we get into the nitty-gritty of making an indoor golf mat, you need to make sure of a few important things.

Let’s have a brief look at them.

1. Select the Right Size

The first thing you should consider while making an indoor golf mat is the size required by your indoor golf setup.

Indoor practice ranges demand a larger golf mat compared to indoor simulator systems.

Before you go out to buy the necessary equipment for your DIY project, taking measurements of your indoor practice area would be helpful in buying the right size turf.

2. Select the Right Material

After selecting the right size for your indoor golf mat, now is the time to select the right materials for it.

It involves two basic steps; selecting the turf material and the base material.

Typically, the golf mat turf is made of nylon, polypropylene, or polyethylene.

These materials impact not just the shape of grass but also the overall performance of a golf mat.

Coming to the base material, look for a high-quality rubber base that provides longevity, flexibility, and tear resistance.

You can go with a rubber fatigue mat that’s easily available at any hardware store.

3. Gather Your Tools

Lastly, make sure to gather all the necessary tools required for making an indoor golf mat.

You’ll need different tools depending on the type of mat you’re going to build.

In our case, we’ll need the following;

Making an Indoor Golf Mat: A Step-by-Step Process

Now that we’ve got our hands on everything we need to build an indoor golf mat, Let’s actually do it!

I’m gonna use this YouTube video by Built by BMason as a reference for this guide. Let’s watch it and then delve into our step-by-step process;

Everything explained!

1. Trim the Turf & the Base

The first step is to cut the base into the required dimensions. In our case, we’re using a rubber fatigue mat.

  • Place the mat on a flat surface and cut it into 4’x5’ using a scissor.
  • Now, select the piece of artificial grass and place the rubber fatigue mat over it.
  • Trim down the visible sides of artificial green using scissors.
  • Make sure to leave about 1-2 inches on all sides.

2. Attach the Turf to the Base

After cutting the turf and the base to the required size, use a permanent spray adhesive to stick the artificial grass on the base.

  • Take the adhesive and spray it all over the mat while making sure to use plenty of it on the edges
  • Place the turf on the rubber mat and gently rub your hand over it
  • This allows the artificial grass to make contact with the adhesive material
  • If there’s any crease on the turf, make sure to remove it at this stage
  • Allow the golf mat to dry
  • Turn around the mat and trim the extra artificial grass off all edges

3. Cut the Hole

Cutting the hole is important to make your indoor golf mat playable.

You can cut multiple holes to make it a putting green or just add a tee position to use it with golf simulators. It’s all your choice.

  • Cut a 3-4 inch circular hole through the golf mat using a utility knife
  • Take the rubber mat piece and attach it to a tee holder using iron brads
  • Place that combination back into the hole to use the mat as a proper golf mat
  • You can also remove it back to use the mat as a putting green

4. Test Your Indoor Golf Mat

Finally, it is time to test your DIY indoor golf mat. Place the mat next to your golf net and begin hitting a few shots to test its performance.

Obviously, it’s not gonna feel like real grass by any means, but if you’ve made it right, it’ll be close.

Why Make it Yourself: How it Benefits You?

Keeping in view that there are multiple premade indoor golf mats available in the market, why is there a need to build one for yourself?

Let’s look at some key benefits to justify this.

1. Cost Efficiency

The cost comes as one of the crucial factors while you’re looking for a product.

Normally, pre-made golf mats are expected to cost more compared to the ones you’ll make yourself.

You can build a proper indoor golf mat for around $200 by selecting the right materials.

2. Unlimited Customization

Another problem with premade indoor golf mats is that they have no room for customization.

If by any chance you select the wrong size, you’ll find yourself in trouble.

However, when it comes to DIY indoor golf mats, you can use your creativity to craft whatever suits you best.
